The prodigal woodworker returns from business trips<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hey there friends and neighbors, I&#8217;m sorry you haven&#8217;t heard from me in a while but there&#8217;s this thing that pays the rent and keeps food on the table that I have to deal with. I&#8217;ve been in the land of dates and niqabs not once, but twice, in the last 4 weeks and let me tell you, I&#8217;m not happy about it. However\u2026..comma\u2026..I get a paycheck to do a job and I&#8217;m going to do it until I start my own business and build furniture for a living (hysterical laughter issues from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peanut_gallery\">peanut gallery<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joking aside, I&#8217;ve made some progress on the cabinet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><!--more-->I ended the last chapter with a dry-fit of the back panel and that was acceptable so I&#8217;ll go ahead and prepare the pieces for glue-up. I&#8217;ve mentioned before how exceedingly useful a properly prepared card scraper can be. One thing I&#8217;ve noticed is that a scraper that is a little dull can still perform on hardwood but when it comes to soft pine, it&#8217;s completely useless so I give my scrapers a quick prep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If they&#8217;ve been re-burred more than 3 or 4 times, I&#8217;ll condition the edges on my waterstones. I use the method shown by William Ng in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nz6EpQu2HRo\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-0\">video<\/a>, I just wish I had the space for a large dedicated sharpening station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5724.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1393 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5724-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5731.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1394\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5731-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My skills at producing a good burr are getting better. Lately, I&#8217;ve been trying to use sandpaper less and less and a good scraper is essential to that goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5777.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1398 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5777-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because this is such a delicate frame and panel (10mm thick rails and stiles and 5mm panels) I don&#8217;t want to take a chance that the oil will act like glue when it&#8217;s dry and possibly cause the panels to crack when they move during seasonal changes. I was worried about the flimsiness of the 5mm thick panels and the chance of gaps appearing as they shrank so I glued a couple of thin strips to the back. This way the panel can still move with the seasons without cracking and no gaps will appear in the middle. There&#8217;s probably a better way to do this so feel free to comment :-).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6001.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1421 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6001-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I set the back panel on a shelf and prepare the sides, top and bottom for gluing. Using the scraper, I dress the edges and then scrape the faces. I don&#8217;t want to get any glue on the end grain yet so I use a little stick to get the glue right inside the dowel holes, enough, but not too much. I decided that it would be cool if the drawer front had a concave curve cut into it. I occasionally have these ideas, the most infamous one was when Monika and I were planning the kitchen addition for the house in Albuquerque and I looked up and said &#8220;Why don&#8217;t we tear out this 8&#8242; ceiling and make a vaulted one?&#8221; 2 months of extra work, but it did look cool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Anyhow, during the course of the next few paragraphs you&#8217;re probably going to think &#8220;what an idiot, he should have done _____ first&#8221;. Well, you would be right, but let&#8217;s do this anyway. First thing is to mark the width of the drawer front on my piece of stock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5793.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-16\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1402\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5793-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And since I want to draw a segment of a large arc on the top edge of this piece I now have a chance to use an amazingly useful item, a pair of trammel points. With these and a long stick, you can make a huge compass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Trammels.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-17\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1450\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Trammels-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I first marked the center point of the drawer front and drew a line on my benchtop perpendicular to the front edge. Using a long stick with my trammel points, one of which has a pencil lead installed, and some trial and error, I determined where the center point of the arc would be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5797.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-18\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1405\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5797-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A small indentation marks the spot for the center point and I draw the arc on the top edge of the drawer front. I marked the center point because I have two drawer fronts to do; this way I can find the point again and draw the same arc on both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5796-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-19\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1454\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5796-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5795.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-20\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1403 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5795-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Now comes a tricky bit, and I don&#8217;t think I can recommend this to anyone. I&#8217;m sure there is a better way however, at the time, I didn&#8217;t think of one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I have a dedicated bandsaw blade that is great for re-sawing and I only use it for that. I install it on the bandsaw and wipe the blade with a little bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PAM_(cooking_oil)\">Pam<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I didn&#8217;t film myself making the cut so the below pictures are a re-enactment in 3 steps. Normally, I would clamp my re-saw guide to the table however, in this case due to the curved cut, I left it free and used my left hand to hold it in place and slowly move it as needed. I used my right hand to guide the cut while keeping my fingers away from the blade as much as possible. Yes, that would have been a better idea. In this case, I use the saved offcuts from the bandsaw in order to clamp the drawer front in a vise when needed, but it sure would have been easier the other way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Anyway, it is what it is. I trim the side pieces so they also fit with little or no gap and are just a bit longer than needed. I&#8217;ll trim as necessary once the drawer is glued-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6030.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-27\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1426\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6030-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The two pieces I have for drawer fronts are actually not the same thickness. On the thinner piece, I&#8217;m not comfortable with the idea of dovetails so I cut rabbets in each end and glue the sides into them. For the other, thicker piece (about 17mm), I start by marking the sides for the tails first. For through dovetails, I have better results when I cut the pins first but for half-blind, like for drawer fronts, it&#8217;s easier for me to cut tails first. I&#8217;m not stuck on this yet and am still bouncing back and forth between pins vs tails first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6031-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-28\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1455\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6031-1-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So with the thickness of the front at 17mm I decide that a 12mm depth for the blind pins is in order and set my marking gauge. Sandwich the two sides in the vise and pencil in the angles of the tails, then saw both pieces at the same time, increasing accuracy. I have a scrap piece of cocobolo from many years ago (never throw away scraps of exotic wood) that I will use for the knobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I pencil the shape I want on to the face of the scrap and cut the curves on the bandsaw. Then I put\u00a0the knob\u00a0in the vise along the grain\u00a0and use a steel screw the same size to &#8220;cut&#8221; the threads in the knob. Basically, I drive the screw in and out a few times. It sounds like overkill but I&#8217;ve split more than a few knobs in my day\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6092.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-42\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1445 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/eastmountainkustom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6092-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A little dab of epoxy inside the screw hole for added strength and then I mount the knob.
